The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has announced the unbundling of the Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication programme into three new specialised areas of study.

The Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, announced the unbundling in a letter addressed to the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abuja.

Consequently, Bugaje said there will no longer be admissions into the HND Mass Communication programme from the 2024/2025 academic session.

TheNewsZenith reports that NBTE also copied the letter to all Heads of Polytechnics, Monotechnics and similar Technical Institutions.

In the letter, a copy of which TheNewsZenith has in possession, NBTE said the unbundling became necessary due to emerging trends in national development.

“Due to emerging trends in national development and the need to strategically position our graduates for more effective national development, I wish to notify you that the Board has unbundled the HND Mass Communication programme run in all institutions under our purview.

“The new specialised areas floated out of the former are as follows:

i) HND Strategic Communication and Media Studies
ii) HND Journalism and Media Studies
iii) HND Film and Multimedia Production

“Consequently, there will no longer be admissions into the HND Mass Communication programme from the 2024/2025 academic session.

“Students that have already been admitted into the former programme are given up
to 2025 to phase out.

“This is to enable concerned institutions to graduate students who were admitted under the
old curricula.

“Given the above, you are requested to kindly note that admissions from the 2024/2025 academic session into the erstwhile HND Mass Communication programme will be only in the aforementioned specialised areas,” the letter dated Jan. 8. read in part.
