Peter Obi: Team disowns political statement credited to Sultan

By Our Correspondent

The Sultanate has condemned a statement on social media, attempting to drag Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, into toxic political water.

Reacting to the alleged statement by the media team of one of the frontline presidential candidates, Prince Bashir Adefaka, a member of the Sultanate Media Team, described the statement as fake and misleading content.
According to him, the candidate’s statement quoting the Sultan as openly supporting his candidature is a tissue of lies.
“It is aimed designed to give the candidate undeserved political points.
“The attention of the Media Team of Sultan of Sokoto, has been drawn to a statement circulating on social media titled, “Breaking: Sultan of Sokoto Writes”
“It has an opening credited to Sultan purportedly saying, “hold me responsible if Peter Obi didn’t perform well.
“The problem of the North is from the north, not Peter Obi or an Igbo man,”’ the Sultanate stated.
Adefaka noted that the statement should ordinarily not be dignified.
“But we chose to react because of the need to put the record straight for the sake of truth-seeking Nigerians.”

This is not the first time such a misleading statement would circulate in an effort to climb on the influential personality of the Sultan to score political goals.
“Unfortunately, the Sultan of Sokoto is a traditional ruler and leader of Muslims in Africa’s most populous country.
“Moreso, as a retired army general, his discipline, commitment and loyalty to Nigeria is non-negotiable.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the statement is fake because such a write-up, credited to him (Sultan), could not have emanated from anywhere near him,” the statement further read in part.
According to Adefaka, between Wednesday and Thursday this week, the Sultan played host to many figures including the outgoing and new General Officers Commanding (GOCs), 8 Division Nigerian Army, Sokoto, Major Generals O. Bassey and Godwin Mutkut, respectively.
The Sultan also hosted the Vice Presidential Candidate of the APC, Senator Kashim Shettima, among others.
“Peter Obi is not one of those that paid a visit to the palace, be it on Wednesday or Thursday.
The Sultanate challenged LP’s press team to produce a letter purportedly written by the Sultan where he endorsed Obi.
