Premier varsity inaugurates TETFUND board for Diaspora Studies

Prof. Kayode Adebowale, Vice Chancellor, University of Ibadan, has inaugurated a board for the institution’s TETFund Centre of Excellence for Diaspora Studies.

AbdulRahman Balogun, Director of Media and Protocol, Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) announced this in a statement.

He emailed the statement to TheNewsZenith at the weekend.

Balogun quoted the VC as charging the board members to be above board in bringing the first Africa Centre to fruition.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Peter Olapegba, represented the VC at the inauguration.

Adebowale said the ”Centre of Excellence is unique in many ways in bringing development to humanity”.

Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose UI DVC and Chairman of the Board congratulated NIDCOM Board Members, Hon. Abdulrahman Terab and Abdur-Rahman Balogun after the inauguration in Ibadan.

 

Adebowale recalled that the Chairman of NIDCOM, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa had signed the UI-NIDCOM Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) when she visited the university last year.

The signing of the MoU led to the creation of the  TETFund Centre of Excellence for Diaspora Studies in 2023.

He noted that UI constituted the centre in order to achieve the objectives for which it was established.

The board is headed by Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Research, Innovation and Strategic Partnerships).

It will oversee the approval and ratification of policies for implementation in the centre’s running.

He added that the board would also give statutory reports of its activities to the Vice-Chancellor regularly.

In her remarks, the board chairman, Prof. Bamgbose, gave assurance that it would justify the confidence reposed in it.

”The centre will soon become world-renowned for Diaspora Studies,” she said.

Also speaking, the pioneer Director of the centre, Prof. Senayon Olaoluwa appreciated NIDCOM for supporting the university in establishing the centre.

TheNewsZenith gathered that NIDCOM has two representatives on the board of the centre.

They are Abdulrahman Terab, Head of Technology Transfer and Innovation Department and Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media and Protocols.

The institution also has eight members from various faculties on the board of the centre.

Dabiri-Erewa had said that the Centre in the premier university would leverage the strategic advantages of the Premier institution renowned for its excellence in research and scholarship

It will ensure maximum impact and benefit for all stakeholders.

TheNewsZenith gathered that works have started on the construction of the centre as TETFUND had released fund for it.
