Rail bridge collapses in China, killing 12

Qinghai (China), Aug. 23, ’25 (TNZ) A railway bridge under construction in China collapsed on Friday, leaving at least 12 people dead and four others missing, according to Xinhua, China’s official state news agency.

The bridge, which was nearing completion in Qinghai Province, in northwest China, collapsed when a steel cable snapped around 3.00 a.m., local time.

The incidence ccaused a section to plummet into the water below, Xinhua said.

Video shared by local news outlets appeared to show a central portion of the bridge shift and then collapse into the Yellow River in a shower of sparks and water.

More than 800 people joined a rescue effort on Friday, Xinhua said.

There were 16 workers at the site at the time of the collapse, the news agency said.

Twelve people were reported dead, with four others missing, according to the report.

Aerial photos from the official Xinhua News Agency show a large section missing from the bridge’s curved aquamarine arch.

A bent section of the bridge deck hangs downward into the Yellow River below.

Sixteen workers were on the bridge when a steel cable snapped during a tensioning operation, Xinhua said.

Boats, a helicopter and robots were being used in the search for the missing.

The bridge is 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) long and its deck is 55 metres (180 feet) above the surface of the river below, the English-language China Daily newspaper said. (Xinhua/TNZ)
