The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has rolled out modalities for the absorption of returnee students from war-torn countries into Nigerian university programmes.
Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, announced this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.
Benjamin said JAMB rolled out the modalities as follow-ups to high-level meetings among relevant government agencies and other critical stakeholders.
He said the meeting focused on integrating returnee students from war-torn countries into the Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
According to him, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede presented the modalities.
He quoted Oloyede as saying “it is imperative to hold talks with the Vice-Chancellors following the peculiarities of each university.
“And the variation in the responses received from them on the matter”.
Oloyede reportedly pointed out that they conveyed an emergency meeting to fashion out uniform standards and minimum acceptable benchmarks for the proposed absorption.

“This is in line with global best practices.”
The JAMB Registrar also said the Senate of each university have the right to decide on university transfers.
“They needed not wait for JAMB to initiate such,” Oloyede said.
He reminded the Vice Chancellors to key into the earlier advisory sent to universities on the procedures for processing applications for foreign and domestic inter-university transfers.
“The current advisory on the returnees does not override the earlier one.
“It rather served to reinforce it by strengthening the procedures for transfers,” the JAMB boss said.
According to the latest advisory on procedures for emergency students transfers, JAMB mandated each of them to do a retroactive registration with the Education Ministry.
“They should visit the returnee application page on Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS) as accessible from the JAMB website.
“ON the site, the returnee students will upload their registration slips and complete the transfer of personal data.
“The personal data would include their name, NIN, telephone number, active e-mail account, current university, country, city of study and programme, year and current level of study.
