By Abdulfatah Babatunde

The Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has acknowledged the efforts of three universities to absorb Nigerian returnee students from Sudan.

Dabiri-Erewa stated this when she received the Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye in Abuja.

The institutions are Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State, Summit University, Offa, Kwara State and American University, The Gambia.

She promised to relay the message to returnee students and that those who are interested will follow the right procedures.

“We visited JAMB and JAMB has given conditions, processes and guidelines to follow.

“I am sure you are aware of these.

“And even if you admit them, we will need that letter that say JAMB has given them admission.

“So, we will avoid situations that after graduation they can’t go for youth service,” she added.

NiDCOM boss thanked the visiting VC for the admission offer to Nigerian students who have returned from Sudan.

“I also thank you for saying you will give a generous concession for them.”

Earlier, Prof. Ezemonye explained that the institution had programmes accredited by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and other professional bodies.

He commended NiDCOM for the evacuation of stranded Nigerians back home.

That success, he said, motivated the visit to discuss modalities for placement of the returnee students to continue their education.

Similarly, the Co-founder of ‘Friends of Nigeria, Europe’, an NGO led by Abiodun Odunuga, said he had received offers for scholarships from the American International University, The Gambia, for some Nigerian student returnees from Sudan.

Odunuga added that the scholarships were for students who were willing to come to The Gambia with practical courses.

He added that the offer is also for students willing to participate in the Paris Graduate School for online courses such as in Human Resources and Business Management.

The Summit University, Offa, Kwara State, has also indicated interest in absorbing students’ evacuees from Sudan into its academic programmes for easy integration.

Meanwhile, Abike Dabiri-Erewa used the opportunity to commend the selfless and patriotic zeal of all stakeholders in the reabsorption process.

She also expressed appreciation to Air Peace, Azman Air, Max Air, Tarco Airline, Dangote Foundation, MTN Foundation and educational institutions who have offered concessions to re-absorb the students.

So far, as of Thursday, we have evacuated 2,246 Nigerians from Sudan back home in 12 batches.
