The Ministry of Defence says the implementation of Nigeria’s defence policy is critical to the security and well-being of the country.
The Permanent Secretary, Dr Ibrahim Kana, made these remarks in a lecture at the National Defence College, Abuja.
In a statement, Mrs Victoria Agba-Attah, the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations quoted Kana as delivering a lecture for participants of Course 31 of the College, on Tuesday.
“Defence policy implementation is critical to our national security. It plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of our citizens.
“It also ensures the integrity of our nation,” Kana said in the statement.
According to him, one of the most important functions of the federal government is to provide a framework for managing the nation’s security architecture and protecting citizens.
He, however, said that stakeholders must synergise to ensure that the policy works.
“The implementation of defence policy is a complex and multifaceted task.
“It requires coordination and cooperation of various stakeholders, both within and outside the military establishment,” the permanent secretary added.
Kana said Nigeria, like many other nations, is facing several security challenges.

He listed such challenges as terrorism, insurgency, communal conflicts, organised crimes and violent extremism among others.
The permanent secretary said the government can tackle these challenges through a comprehensive and integrated approach.
Such an approach, he noted involves formulating and implementing appropriate defence policies.
He said the government had developed various defence policies that have brought relative peace and security to the country.
He assured participants that the ministry would ensure the effective implementation of the policies.
In his remarks, the Commandant of the College, Rear Admiral O.M. Olotu commended the permanent secretary for doing justice to the topic.
He said Kana’s thoughts on the policies would give a brighter direction to the nation’s defence sector.
“The lecture will greatly benefit the 113 participants of Course 31, in the discharge of their duties,” Olotu said.
