Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to nursing mothers to take adequate care of their babies with nutritious weaning food for their brain development.
Tinubu also urged mothers to immunise their babies as and when due while they practice exclusive breastfeeding.
The First Lady gave this advice while welcoming the “First Baby of the year” at the National Hospital, Abuja.
She also appealed to Nigerians to join hands with the government to adopt hospitals and wards for improved healthcare delivery. The government alone cannot do it, she added.
“Expectant mothers must prioritise their health and seek to know their HIV/AIDS status. This would enable them to prevent mother-to-child transmission of the disease and help them stay healthy,” she said.
“Expectant mothers should always take antenatal and postnatal care seriously. They should maintain basic hygiene at home and space their births.
“Mothers should also register their babies with the National Population Commission and enrol them in school at the appropriate age,” Tinubu advised.

She said her Foundation, Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), “is collaborating with UNICEF to ensure that all births in Nigeria are registered”. This is to ensure the rights and protection of all children.
After visiting the Baby boy, Boluwatife Johnson, born at exactly 12.30 a.m., Sen. Oluremi Tinubu also visited other babies just born in the hospital and gave them gifts.
In the process, she came across a set of conjoined twins.
Tinubu told the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the National Hospital that RHI would facilitate the surgery to separate the twins.
The CMD, Prof. Mohammed Mahmood thanked the First Lady for her kind gesture.
Mahmood appeal for more help to sustain the legacy of the hospital.
