Realising the contribution of sports to nation-building, the Ministers of Sports and Information have held a crucial meeting, emphasising the urgent need to partner in the coverage of sporting events.

This came to the fore when the Sports Minister, Sen. John Enoh paid a visit to his counterpart in Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Malagi in Abuja.

Diana Nsan, Special Assistant (Media) to Sports Minister gave details of the meeting in a statement issued to the Media on Friday.

Nsan quoted Sen. Enoh as reparking that “sports has power in our National life. So, there is an urgent need to partner for the coverage of sporting events for viewership by Nigerians”.

Enoh emphasised the significant role sports play in the country, noting that sport is a unifier.

“To this end, television and radio broadcasts are fundamental to feeding the nation. This will foster unity amongst other positives for the well-being of the country.

“A typical example is AFCON. When our National Team played games at AFCON, Nigerians all came together, regardless of tribe, religion, class or political affiliation.

“They support the National team and cheer them to victory. We were all fixated on victory,” Enoh said.

He then sought partnerships with the Ministry of Information and its media organs to promote sports development in the country.

He suggested the design of a calendar of upcoming sporting events. Such a calendar should serve as a guide for the public media organs to amplify and further broadcast them.

Responding, Malagi commended his guest’s performance as Sports Minister.

He observed that his consistent hands-on and brilliant performance in the sports sector has quelled the concerns of Nigerians on his appointment as sports minister.

He also stressed the administration’s commitment to harnessing the transformative power of sports to deepen national unity and cohesion.
