The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted 15 sacks of 538 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa, valued at N107.2 million.
TheNewsZenith reports that a statement quoted the Command’s Area Controller, Comptroller Paul Bamisaiye, on Tuesday, as announcing the interception in Lagos.
The statement, signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Magaji Mailafiya, noted that the seized bags contained 1,021 loaves of the illicit substances.
It quoted Bamisaiye as saying that NCS officers interested the consignment along the Ajido Waterways, Yekeme axis of the Command.
He said that the seizures were examined at the command headquarters and weighed 538kg with a duty-paid value (DPV) of N107.2 million.
Bamisaiye said that the consignment was intercepted at the waterfront
According to him, the suspected smugglers were offloading the items from their faulty boat when the operatives swooped on them.
“Upon sighting our vigilant marine officers, the suspects abandoned the items and fled.

“Despite hostile environment, the patrol team successfully intercepted the sacks and moved them to the Western Marine Command Headquarters for further investigation.
“The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, and his management team have been instrumental to the command’s successes.
“He has been providing critical resources and equipment to the Western Marine Command,” TheNewsZenith quoted the statement as read in part.
This, Bamisaiye reportedly said, has empowered the Command to achieve remarkable successes.
The command has ensured to cripple activities of smugglers on the waterways.
“This has created a secure and thriving environment for legitimate trade in the area,” he said.
“The Western Marine Command, under my leadership, is ready to ensure that the waterways remain effectively secured from smuggling activities.
