Grant-Writing: Sa’adu Zungur University boosts research capacity

The Vice Chancellor of Sa’adu Zungur University, Prof. Fatimah Tahir, has emphasized the importance of training academic staff on the best approach to writing grant-winning proposals.

TheNewsZenith reports that Tahir made the remarks at a training workshop on writing grant-winning Concept Notes and Proposals for the academic staff of the university, in Bauchi.

She noted that writing grant-winning proposals was crucial for the university’s research growth and development.

TheNewsZenith gathered that the Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation (CERI) facilitated the workshop.

Sa’adu Zungur University, (formerly Bauchi State University) is located in Gadau, with other campuses in Misau and Bauchi.

Opening the workshop, the Vice Chancellor reiterated the need for the academic staff to understand the requirements for accessing grants.

She noted that each grant has its peculiarities, which the workshop seeks to acquaint them with.

“Each grant has its requirements. If you don’t understand the requirements of any grant, you would not be able to access it,” Tahir said.

Nowadays, she said, universities are boasting about how many awards they can secure.

“This relates to the good research work they have produced,” the VC said. She urged that Sa’adu Zungur University should not be left behind.

“This workshop is important and I implore you to be attentive. Participate actively and let your contribution be recognised.”

Tahir thanked the CERI for partnering with the university to organise the workshop.

Also speaking, the Director of CERI, Dr Usman Adamu Garkuwa, said that the workshop aimed to address the need for researchers to access funding opportunities.

Garkuwa said the centre recognised the challenges facing academic staff in writing winning proposals.

“This is why we decided to bridge the gap with this workshop,” he said.

The director added that society has some problems that require research efforts. This is to find lasting solutions for them.

“We have many challenges ranging from the healthcare system, economic, insecurity and out-of-school children among others,” Garkuwa said.

He challenged academia to play a significant role in helping to solve some of these societal problems.

Garkuwa, therefore, said they should acquire training on how to get funding for their research.

Resource persons at the workshop highlighted the importance of building a strong research team and leveraging collaboration to secure grants.

Participants expressed gratitude for the opportunity as the workshop has equipped them with the skills to write a winning proposal.

The interactive sessions and feedback from facilitators are particularly helpful, they said.
