The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has warned government Ministries, Agencies, Embassies, High Commissions and Diaspora groups to beware of phoney diaspora groups.

Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, gave the warning in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

Balogun stated that the phoney groups have apparent sinister and ulterior motives, parading as authentic diaspora groups.

He specifically mentioned a group called Nigeria Diaspora Forum (NDF). The group, he stated, allegedly claimed it established an office in Abuja for the welfare of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

“The so-called Forum is an arm of the Labour Party (LP). It is masquerading as a diaspora group and not registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

“We are aware that all registered political parties, including the ruling APC, and even LP among others, have diaspora chapters.

“They have support groups outside the country and do work to promote and champion their party ideals.

“It is equally sinister that an unregistered body with the Corporate Affairs Commission will fraudulently announce setting up office to oversee welfare of Nigerians in Diaspora in Abuja.”

Balogun stated that this is an attempt to fraudulently hoodwink unsuspecting members of the public and the governments.

“We hereby advise all government agencies at both the federal and state levels as well as the diplomatic community to always double-check with NIDCOM the status of such groups.

“NIDCOM has a database of all registered diaspora groups.

“NIDCOM is the only commission mandated by an act of the Parliament to oversee the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora, in the last four years.”
