Abuja, Jan. 10, ’25 (TNZ)The Democratic Front (TDF) says it supports Gov. Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State’s latest position on President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, which are currently before the National Assembly.

TheNewsZenith reports that TDF Chairman, Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, announced this in a statement in Abuja.

The group described the governor’s change of position as a good development.

“We agree with the views expressed by the Nasarawa State Governor on an Arise Television programme recently.

Sule said that lack of adequate clarity propelled the initial opposition from northern state governors against the tax reform.

According to him, they do not understand some of the contents of the tax reform bill.

“This, for us, is a welcome development, especially as it came in the wake of continuous stakeholder engagement,” TDF stated.

The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform, Mr Taiwo Oyedele is currently engaging with stakeholders nationwide.

“We, therefore, commend Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his remarkable, which is a show of maturity, understanding and statesmanship.

“It is a demonstration of disembarking from his earlier stance against the bills, by openly expressing support for their passage.

“We also call on the Northern Governors Forum to join Gov. Sule in encouraging the National Assembly to pass the tax reform bills without delay.

“TDF have always insisted that President Bola Tinubu designed the tax bills to usher in a progressive national tax system.

“The tax reforms will meet the economic and political aspirations of Nigerians in the emerging global economy,” TheNewsZenith quotes the group as stating.

It also commended the President’s courage in encouraging the true spirit of democracy and freedom of expression among Nigerians in the heat of discussions around the tax reform.

“We appreciate the continuous efforts, sacrifices and commitment exhibited by both the Chairman of the Presidential Committee and the Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) in their drive to enlighten Nigerians on the objectives of the tax reform.

“There is no aspect of the tax reform bills that is prejudicial to the economic interest of Northern Nigeria.

“Rather, the bills seek to exempt the teeming population of masses from tax payment until they can attain a significant level of economic productivity,” the statement further read in part. (TNZ)
