2-storey building collapses, inuring 6 persons in Abuja

Abuja, April 4, (TNZ) Six people sustained injuries after a two-storey building, under construction, collapsed in the Jikwoyi area of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the Federal Capital Territory.

TheNewsZenith reports that the structure reportedly collapsed around 11.00 a.m. on Friday,  while workers were on site, triggering an emergency response from relevant agencies.

Nkechi Isa, the Head of Public Affairs at the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), confirmed the incident in a statement, mailed to TheNewsZenith.

Isa noted that rescue teams were immediately deployed to the scene to ensure no one remained trapped beneath the debris.

According to the agency, about 17 workers were on the upper level of the building when the incident occurred.

“Five workers on the upper floor sustained injuries, while another on the ground floor was trapped in the rubble.

“Emergency responders rescued the victims and later took them to a nearby hospital in Jikwoyi.

“Officials said the injured individuals are receiving treatment and are responding well,” TheNewsZenith quotes Isa as explaining.

Personnel from several agencies participated in the rescue operation.

They include FEMD, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Department of Development Control, and the Engineering Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA).

Others were the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Federal Fire Service (FFS), and officers of the FCT Police Command.

Authorities said excavation and search efforts at the collapse site continued as responders worked to reach ground level to confirm that no other victims were trapped under the rubble.

Meanwhile, a fire outbreak affected part of a car sales and service centre along the Kubwa Expressway in the Bwari Area Council.

TheNewsZenith gathered that the incident occurred around noon on Friday at the Earloha Chery Centre located at Arab Junction in Kubwa.

FEMD’s Head of Search and Rescue, Monday Adie, stated that there was no casualty in the fire incident.

Adie said workers quickly pushed vehicles away from the premises after attempts to extinguish the fire failed.

No casualties, but the fire destroyed part of the building. It also damaged several pieces of equipment and important documents at the facility. (TNZ)
