That deposed Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has been reinstated nor the current Emir dethrone is no longer news. But we now know why Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano reinstated the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, back to the royal stool.
TheNewsZenith reports that the governor said he decided to fulfil one of his campaign promises to people of Kano by reinstating Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II.
The reinstatement followed the Kano State House of Assembly’s resolution to dethrone the current Emir and also dismantle the four new Emirates in the State established under a controversial 2019 law.
Fillers from Kano indicated that Sanusi II is expected to return to Kano on Friday, May 24, according to a source quoted by LEADERSHIP.
“So, certainly with the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, the thing bill is waiting for the Governor to assent to it,” LEADERSHIP quoted ‘credible inside sources’.
But while signing the Bill into law on Thursday, Gov. Yusuf said the law has repealed the State Emirate Council Law 2019 that gave the state five emirate councils.
Recall that the former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje administration had in 2019, restructured the Kano Emirate into five and deposed the Emir Sanusi II.
Yusuf described the emirate restructuring then, as a political manoeuvre to diminish the influence of the Emir Sanusi II.
“The creation of the new emirates fragmented the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council, diluting its power and influence”.
Sanusi II was a hard critic of Ganduje’s administration.
Meanwhile, at the state House of Assembly on Thursday, the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, told newsmen that the Bill that the House has sent the Bill to the Governor for assent.
Yan Gurasa, who sponsored the Amendment Bill said “now there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates; Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano and Karaye.
“The law now provides the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king”.
Lawmakerd passed the bill for the dissolution of the four additional emirates created by the immediate past administration of former Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje and the removal of all five emirs.
Meanwhile, the Director General, Media and Publicity to Kano State Governor in a statement quoted Gov. Yusuf as saying the the new law provided for the reinstatement of Mr Lamido as Emir of Kano.
It also provided for the removal of all the Emirs in all the five emirates.
“The law provided an opportunity for reinstatement of the 14th Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II and removal of the 15th Emir of Kano Aminu Ado Bayero.
Emir of Bichi Nasir Ado Bayero, Emir of Rano Kabiru Muhammad Inuwa, Emir of Karaye Ibrahim Abubakar II and Emir of Gaya Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir also deemed removed, according to the law.
“Gov. Yusuf further articulated that the return of Muhammad Sanusi II to the throne will propel peace and prosperity.
“He added that the repeal of the council law was in realisation of his campaign commitments to restore the lost glory of the state and its rich cultural heritage.
“Gov. Yusuf also issued 48 hours to Aminu Ado Bayero and four other former first class chiefs to vacate their palaces.
“They should hand over all emirates property to the office of the deputy governor.
