From Assidiq Musab, Kano
Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State, says his administration has successfully negotiated a reduction of over N2 billion in tuition liabilities owed to the Middle East University, Cyprus for the education of state-sponsored students between 2015 and 2019.
TheNewsZenith reports that Yusuf announced this at the 22nd Executive Council Meeting, on Wednesday in Kano.
He said his administration “will now comfortably source funds to pay the liabilities”.
“This will enable the students to collect their certificates.”
Yusuf said he recently visited Cyprus to discuss the issue of liability payment for the students
“The purpose of my visit to Cyprus was to discuss the issue of liability payment for over 50 students between 2015 and 2019.
“Unfortunately, since they completed their studies about five years ago, the immediate past administration did not pay tuition fees.
This led to the withholding of their certificates.

“The Kano State Government owes over three million Euros.
“After a series of negotiations, the school management agreed to reduce the debt to N1.9 billion.
“We appreciate and commend this,” TheNewsZenith quotes the governor as saying.
He said his administration inherited the debt liabilities from the immediate-past administration of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
In a press statement, Sanusi Bature, the governor’s spokesman, said the liabilities, totalling over three million euros (about N4 billion), were left unpaid by the Ganduje-led government.
The governor expressed dismay over the plight of the students, who have been idle since their return to the country.
He said they have been unable to judiciously utilise their qualifications.
