Lagos, April 1, ’26 (TNZ) A political gladiator in Kano has described Rabiu Kwankwaso’s defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a vindication of the ruling APC’s stand that the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has lost credibility.
TheNewsZenith reports that the gladiator, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed Jamo, said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Tuesday, that the former Kano State Governor could not sustain the NNPP as a political force in the state.
Jamo argued that the move validates Gov. Abba Yusuf’s earlier decision to leave the NNPP.
He noted that the defections signal a turning point in Kano politics.
“There are always two sides to every coin.
“If we are to look at it from the perspective from which many people in Kano see what is happening today, it is a vindication of our position.
“Kwankwaso’s defection underscores the weakening influence of the NNPP in Kano,
“Kano is a state where the former governor has long been a dominant political figure.

“The development will strengthen APC’s position ahead of the next election cycle.

“Kwankwaso, a two-term governor of Kano State and former senator, has long been a central figure in northern Nigerian politics.
“Known for his grassroots mobilisation and the “Kwankwasiyya” movement, he played a pivotal role in the NNPP’s rise in Kano,” TheNewsZenith quotes Jamo as saying.
According to the APC chieftain, Kwankwaso’s defection to the ADC marks yet another chapter in his career defined by shifting political alliances, having previously been a member of the PDP and the APC.
TheNewsZenith reports that the NNPP has faced internal divisions in recent months.
It gained significant traction in Kano during the 2023 elections, when it fielded Kwankwaso as its presidential candidate.
Gov. Yusuf’s defection from the party was seen as a major blow to the party, and Kwankwaso’s exit further deepens its crisis. (TNZ)
