A former executive member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Lagos state has called for transparent, fair and credible elections into the association’s leadership.

Former National Executive Council member of NMA, Dr Mario Adelaja, made the call in a statement weekend in Lagos.

The association conducts elections once every two years in all NMA state chapters.

This takes place within three months after the leadership elections at the national level.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Lagos branch has scheduled its elections for Aug. 1.

The elections will take place at the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.

Adelaja urged the leadership of the association to allay the fears of members by ensuring a transparent electoral process.

This is necessary, to achieve a credible and rancour-free election.

“It is about two weeks to the elections. By now, we expect clear-cut guidelines from the NMA secretariat.

“We need information on the state of preparedness, including the voters’ list and security plans for the physical election.

“Fear is heightened, knowing that the State Chairman, Dr Babajide Saheed, is a contestant and an interested party in the election.

“His involvement can affect the credibility of the elections if the guidelines are not clear,” the former NEC member said.

According to him, the concern is coming on the heels of the rancorous experience of the 2016 elections.

He recalled that the election caused sharp division among the rank-and-file medical and dental practitioners in the state.

Adelaja noted that doctors in Lagos oppose the recurrence of such rancorous elections.

“We call on the Chairman and the Secretary of the election committee to be vigilant and act as unbiased umpires, refusing to be used.

“We are looking forward to a free, fair and credible election with a peaceful transition in the forthcoming elections,” TheNewsZenith quotes Adelaja as saying.
