The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria (MMWG) has advised that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should not yield to any pressure to pardon certain public officeholders being investigated for alleged financial misconduct.
The Group said, in a statement on Saturday, that giving in to such pressure would set bad precedence.
TheNewsZeniths reports that MMWG’s National Coordinator Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi and its Ogun State Coordinator, Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde, issued the statement.
Reacting to the call by a political group, Arewa Unity Front that the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu be reinstated given her dedication to duty, the Group counselled against such indulgence and politicisation of criminal offences and economic crimes.
It stated that such action would undermine the renewed effort by President Tinubu at combating the corruption in the country.
“Such a plea should wait for the outcome of the ongoing investigation on the indicted public officers.
“This is in order not to play down the process. The government should not shield any official, past and serving, under investigation,” the Group stated.
While noting that righteousness exalts a nation, MMWG decried the seemingly parochial and sentimental clamour by the group and individuals.

According to the group, such a call for clemency has implications against the revitalised fight against corruption in the country.
The Group, however, called for a fairplay in the course of the investigation. It urged the panel to employ conventional processes so that the outcome of investigation can attain belief.
Meanwhile, MMWG has implored public officeholders to be above board in the discharge of their duties. They should abide by their ‘oath of office and allegiance’.
And they should be wary of actions that can tarnish their good image and the erosion of public confidence in them.
It also called on those at the helm of affairs to embrace the rule of law to ensure fairness, justice, equity and accountability in the nation’s affairs.
“This is necessary for good governance and development of the country,” It stated.
