Abuja, Feb. 1, ’25 (TNZ) Commissioners of Environment from three geo-political zones have called for stronger political will and increased funding to advance climate action at the subnational level.
TheNewsZenith reports that the zones; Nigeria’s South-West, South-East and North-Central made the call at the Nigeria Climate Change Forum, last week in Abuja.
The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) organised the high-level panel session on subnational climate action.
It is in partnership with the African Climate Foundation (ACF).
They highlighted their respective states’ achievements, challenges and opportunities in tackling climate change menace.
Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, President of SPP, moderated the session, which featured distinguished commissioners.
In attendance were Prof. Sam Ugwu, Enugu’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Chief Mrs Tosin Aluko, Ekiti’s Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources and Yakubu Kolo, Niger’s Commissioner for Environment.
Also, Aishat Barde from Taraba and Mrs Eddidiong Eyo, Representing the Department of Climate Change, Federal Ministry of Environment participated.
The session afforded environment commissioners, the opportunity to highlight their states’ climate action strategies.

They also shared best practices and discussed the barriers hindering climate change initiatives.
The commissioners collectively identified several key challenges impeding effective climate action at the subnational level.
These include inadequate climate finance, limited public awareness of climate change issues and insufficient political will from elected officials.
The Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology, hosted the Forum.
It brought together stakeholders from the government, the private sector, advocacy groups, civil society organisations, and local and international NGOs.
The forum served as a platform for innovative discussions on catalyzing transformative climate action across Nigeria and Africa.
TheNewsZenith recalled that SPP conducted a subnational ranking of climate governance performance across Nigeria’s 36 states in July 2024.
Lagos State ranked highest, followed by Gombe State in second place and Ebonyi State in third. Borno and Ekiti States jointly secured the fourth position. (TNZ)
