The Democratic Front (TDF) has welcomed the implementation of the duty-free window for essential food imports into the country as a commendable short-term measure to address the high cost of food items.
TDF’s Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, gave the commendation in a statement emailed to TheNewsZenith at the weekend.
The group said the gesture reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to tame the effects of the rising cost of living.
“We laud President Tinubu’s approval of the zero per cent import duty and VAT exemptions on essential food items.
These will ease hardship and hunger in Nigeria.
“The policy, which takes effect from Aug. 15 leaves nobody in doubt that the President is prepared to mitigate the high cost of food prices.
“He has demonstrated this by making essential commodities more affordable for the citizens.
“We are happy to note his aggressive pursuit of economic reforms and restructuring to pave the way for a prosperous socio-economic development.

“The President has continued to execute his economic policies and actions with a human face and kindness.
“It is in this light that the TDF views the federal government’s interventions and palliatives, including the sacrificial concession to sell the country’s crude oil to local refineries in Naira.
“This is an overwhelming show of his consideration and sensitivity to the plight of Nigerians.
“The president has an avid determination to end the suffering of the people,” the group stated.
It, therefore, posited that the President’s consistent display of responsive and responsible actions in attending to the challenges of governance since he got to power, makes it unnecessary for any individual or group to resort to civil disobedience or mass protests.
“President Tinubu, a grassroots politician, does not need to be pressured to know how the masses feel on national issues.
“It is to the credit of this administration that effective management of the economy has brought down the inflation. From 34.19 per cent. The inflation has come down to 33.3 per cent in July.”
