The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists, fleet operators and truck drivers against excessive speeding, overloading and using expired tyres to reduce road crashes.
TheNewsZenith reports that the new FRSC Sector Commander for Anambra State, Mrs Joyce Alexander, gave the warning during a meeting with drivers, transport unions and fleet operators on Friday, in Awka.
Alexander said the warning became necessary because drivers drove recklessly, overloaded their vehicles and transported human beings with animals regardless of consequences.
According to her, these practices can result in avoidable road accident fatality.
“I am barely three weeks old in Anambra. I have been visiting different areas to monitor compliance with road safety rules.
“During the visits, I discovered problems of overloading, speeding and road obstruction.
“This meeting is for us to talk to drivers and fleet operators about the need to adopt a safer attitude and obey traffic rules.
“We should consider other road users for a safer travelling experience in Anambra.
“We cannot achieve that without cooperation and partnership between the FRSC and the transport operators.
“I am appealing for your support as major stakeholders in the transport industry,” TheNewsZenith quotes the Commander as saying.
She identified the use of expired tyres, overloading, speeding and carrying fuel in gallons as factors responsible for road crashes and loss of lives on Nigerian roads.

Alexander advised motorists to always check the manufacturing and expiry dates of tyres before buying.
“Using such tyres can endanger the lives of drivers and their passengers.
“Always use seat belts, drivers must possess valid licences and ensure passengers’ manifests are properly filled.
“Drivers should also stop carrying petrol in gallons to prevent mishaps and unnecessary loss of lives on the highways.
“We will constitute a joint task force to ensure that drivers flouting traffic rules and regulations are punished accordingly,” she said.
Responding on behalf of fleet operators and transport unions, Mr Ozoemena Okoye, Chairman of Truck Drivers Association of Nigeria, promised to cooperate with the command for successful operations in the state.
“We will take this message to our various transport companies and unions.
“We will also ensure that our drivers adhere to road safety rules,” Okoye said.
He, however, appealed to FRSC officers to treat drivers as partners in progress.
