The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance waste management through innovative solutions, including the establishment of waste-to-energy plants.
Mr Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, announced the plan during the Waste to Energy Summit on Friday in Lagos.
TheNewsZenith reports that the theme of the summit is “Driving Environmental Sustainability”.
Rack Centre in collaboration with the NYSC Community Development Service (CDS), organised the summit in Lagos.
Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), represented the commissioner.
Wahab spoke on the necessity of improving dumpsite management to mitigate environmental hazards in the state.
The commissioner said the Olusosun landfill, initially on the outskirts of Lagos, is now under pressure due to urban development and the increasing volume of solid waste.
To address these challenges, he said LAWMA “is focusing on reducing the waste going to landfills”.
It is doing these through recycling initiatives and developing composite and biogas plants.

“We are working on developing composting and biogas plants on the site.
“In future, we will decommission the Olusosun landfill. We are already in the process.
“Decommissioning the dumpsite is necessary to address long-term environmental and health impacts,” the commissioner said.
In doing so, he said the state government would comply with international best practices.
Furthermore, he said the state would establish three waste-to-energy plants in three locations. The plants will convert waste into resources and reduce landfill dependency.
He listed the locations as Olusosun, Epe and Badagry.
“This strategic move is part of a broader effort to transform waste management and promote environmental sustainability in Lagos.”
TheNewsZenith reports that the summit featured presentations from key stakeholders, who spoke on sustainable solutions to waste management.
