MAI calls for ceasefire in Hamas/Israel conflict

By Our Correspondent

Thousands of Muslims, on Thursday in Lagos, conducted a peaceful procession, calling for a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Muslim Awareness International (MAI) organised the procession at the Dawah Centre, along the Oshodi-Apapa expressway.

Amid the escalating crisis between Hamas and Israel, various Muslim groups in Lagos united with one voice, urging an immediate stoppage of hostility.

They also prayed for enduring peace in the Middle East which has constantly boiled with high levels of fatality.

Abdulwaheed Atoyebi, the Director of MAI, appealed to the international community to uphold previous United Nations agreements on the matter

Atoyebi recalled that the United Nations Resolution of 1947 granted independence to both Israel and Palestine. Unfortunately, he lamented that this resolution has not worked#.

He pointed out that the illegal occupation of Gaza and the repeated intimidation of Palestinians by Israeli forces might have provoked Hamas to respond.

MAI director, therefore, called on the Nigerian government to take sincere steps to end the crisis and expressed solidarity with Palestine.

Also speaking at the event, Mr Tajudeenn Balogun, a member of the legal team of MAI, said it was disheartening that the UN had passed 225 resolutions on the crisis.

“Unfortunately, the global body has not implemented any of these resolutions.

“This contrasts with the situation in Iraq, which the U.S. claimed processed weapons of mass destruction.

“But found nothing after destroying lives and property in that country,” Balogun said.

He emphasised that the events in Gaza, over the past 75 years, amounted to a violation of human rights.
