Marine Customs intercepts 2,000kg cannabis in Lagos

Lagos, Feb. 21, ’25 (TNZ) The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, has intercepted 53 sacks of substances suspected to be cannabis sativa.

TheNewsZenith reports that the sacks contained 3,793 loaves and weighed 1,958 kilogrammes in Lagos.

Compt. Paul Bamisaiye, the Customs Area Controller confirmed the seizure at a news briefing on Thursday, in Lagos.

Bamisaiye explained that his men made the seizure on Friday along the waterways near Bar Beach Outstation in Lagos.

He said it took relentless efforts and commitment of the dedicated officers to confiscate the substance.

According to him, the consignment has an estimated Duty Paid Value (DPV) of N398.27 million, including applicable taxes.

The figure underscores the magnitude of the threat posed by drug smuggling to society, especially to the future of the youth.

Bamisaiye commended the management of the NCS for empowering the Command  in the fight against smuggling operations.

”The headquarters has been providing critical resources and equipment to the Western Marine Command.

“This support has empowered us to achieve remarkable successes in ensuring that smugglers have no haven on our waterways.

”We have, thus, created a secure and thriving environment for legitimate trade.

”Drug smuggling does not only fuels crime but also destroys lives and communities,” TheNewsZenith quotes Bamisaiye as saying.

He urged members of the public to desist from encouraging the trafficking and consumption of these illicit substances.

Illicit substances, he said, ”are contributing to the degradation of our youths and the wider society”.

In line with established procedures, the Area Controller said NCS would case handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

He expressed the command’s desire to continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to bring perpetrators of such smuggling crimes to book.

He commended officers of the Command for their vigilance and dedication.

Bamisaiye urged them to continue to work together in the spirit of national service and commitment to a safer society in the country. (TNZ)
