NDLEA arrests Paris-bound businessman, others with 774 drugs

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 48-year-old businessman, (name withheld), for allegedly ingesting 74 wraps of heroin and cocaine while attempting to board a flight from Abuja Airport to France.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Spokesman for the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi, announced the arrest in a statement on Sunday.

He said operatives of the agency arrested the man at the boarding gate of the airport on Dec. 22, during the outward clearance of passengers on Air France.

He was taken into custody for observation during which he excreted 74 wraps of the Class A drugs over seven days.

In his statement, the suspect reportedly claimed he owned a shop at Balogun market in Lagos where he sells school and travelling bags.

TheNewsZenith quoted NDLEA as stating that the suspect said someone promised him 3,000 Euros to deliver the drugs in Paris.

He said he left Lagos for the Abuja airport to connect his Air France flight to Paris to escape detection.

Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives at the Marine Command intercepted two boats loaded with 1,960 kilogrammes of Ghanaian Loud, a strong strain of cannabis at the Eleko beach in the Lekki area of Lagos State on Dec. 24.

The operatives arrested six foreign nationals, who brought the consignments from Ghana, according to the statement.

In another operation in Katsina State, the agency said its men arrested a suspect (name withheld) with cannabis sativa.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect had 40 album-size parcels of compressed cannabis sativa weighing 35kg.

They arrested him on Christmas day at Central Motor Park, Katsina.

Men of the agency also arrested another suspect along Zaria-Malumfashi road, Katsina on Saturday, Dec. 28.

He was with 27 parcels of the same psychoactive substance, weighing 13.5kg at the time of arrest.

In Edo State, a 21-year-old suspect also fell into the dragnet of the NDLEA at New Lagos Road Benin City on Dec. 23.

Some items recovered from the suspect included 32,490 pills of tramadol 225mg, 200mg and 100mg; 936 bottles of codeine-based syrup and various quantities of other opioids.
