Mr Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate, has advised the Federal Government to invest more in agriculture to conquer food insecurity.

TheNewsZenith reports that Obi gave the advice in a statement circulated on Friday in Abuja.

The former governor of Anambra State stated this in response to the recent World Bank’s Food Security Update Report.

Reacting to the reports, Obi likened Nigeria’s worsening food security crisis to war-torn countries like Yemen.

He stated that there was a significant increase in the number of people facing acute food shortages and hunger.

“The report, sad as it is, only paints a lenient picture of the severity of the food crisis and hunger.

“Over the years, I have maintained that moving the country from consumption to production remains the surest way of combating food insecurity.

“It is the surest way to pull the nation out of the present food crisis.

“I have equally stated unequivocally, that Nigeria’s greatest asset is the vast uncultivated lands in the North coupled with our huge demographics.

“Therefore, we must be intentional with our agricultural investments,” ThenewsZenith quotes Obi as stating.

He expressed the regret that a state like Niger, which is twice bigger in landmass than The Netherlands, could neither feed itself nor the nation.

Obi noted that The Netherlands exports over $100 billion worth of agro products annually. He, therefore, advised the federal government to prioritise investment in agriculture.
