NOC begins construction of its secretariat in Abuja

Abuja, June 16, ’25 (TNZ) The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially begun an ambitious project to establish its permanent secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

TheNewsZenith reports that this initiative aims to enhance the infrastructure and operational capabilities of the NOC.

It is situated on five hectares of land, which the Federal Government allocated to the committee.

The project site was unveiled during a recent meeting of the board of the committee on June 11 in Abuja.

TheNewsZenith gathered that the project is located around the Aviation Village, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The President of the NOC, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, led others sports personalities like Chairman of NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko and the Director-General of NSC, Bukola Olapade  and other members if the committee to the project site.

In a statement, on Monday in Abuja, NOC’s spokesman, Tony Nezianya, said the secretariat will be equipped with various sports training facilities.

“The facilities will cater for the needs of various federations affiliated to the NOC. It will foster a conducive environment for training, development, and sporting excellence.

“This is as Nigeria prepares for upcoming international competitions, including the Commonwealth and the Olympic Games.

“Primarily, the facility will house the NOC Secretariat and streamline the Committee’s operations. It will also enable efficient management of Olympic-related activities in Nigeria.

“We will site some sports training facilities there, with the state-of-the-art training equipment for different sports.

“This aims to provide a platform where athletes can prepare effectively for national and international competitions.

“The establishment of this site is not only a significant step for the NOC but also reflects a commitment to promoting sports development across Nigeria.

“It is expected to create a centralised hub for sports promotion, training, and athletes development.

Consequently, the facility aims at development of athletic programmes with designated training facilities.

“NOC aims to enable federations to conduct training camps, workshops, and seminars that are critical for improving the standards of Nigerian athletes,” TheNewsZernith quotes from the statement.

Neziaya quotes NOC President, Gumel as remarking that the secretariat, constructing in phases, will eventually have five floors.

“The facility will help to boost national sports initiatives. It is envisioned to invigorate initiatives and collaborations, providing various federations with the necessary resources to nurture local and professional talents.

“The Committee is optimistic that this project will not only improve training standards but also contribute to the success of Nigerian athletes on the global stage,” Gumel reportdly said. (TNZ)
