The Ondo State Government, on Thursday, reiterated the need to return to school sports with a view to identify, nurture and promote raw talents.
Mr Bamidele Ologunloluwa, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, made this remark while opening a workshop organised for sports technocrats in the state.
TheNewsZenith reports that the theme of the workshop is “The Role of School Sports in Nation Building”.
Ologunloluwa described sports as a platform for character and leadership development. It is not just a means of winning laurels alone, he added.
According to him, sport is a veritable platform to positively engage youths as it helps to take them off social vices.
“With effective sports administration, we can attain mass sports participation and sports excellence,” he said.
The commissioner noted that poor implementation of sports policy direction has led to neglect of many sporting activities.

“This neglect has culminated into sports apathy, delinquencies and consequently inhibiting the catch them young syndrome.
“Today, you are all invited as technocrats to brainstorm and proffer solutions on the way forward to promote sports for nation-building, especially in Ondo State.
Welcoming the participants, the acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Mrs Foluke Tunde-Daramola, lamented that there has been rapid decline in school sports development.
“The ministry organised the workshop to train and re-train sports teachers and technocrats in the state.
“The focus is to improve the standard of sporting activities. This is with a view to sustaining good health and physical fitness,” Tunde-Daramola said.
