Police arraign 2 for stealing N2.5m electricity cables

The Police in Oyo State, on Friday, arraigned two men – John Mallam, 27 and Kenneth Nanvyat, 31 before an Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court, Ibadan, for allegedly stealing electricity cables worth N2.5 million.

The defendants, with no fixed addresses, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

They, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp Olalekan Adegbit, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on Feb. 29 at 7.30 a.m. at Lagelu Estate, Ibadan.

Adegbite told the court that the duo conspired to steal the cables attached to a transformer belonging to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

He said the offences contravened Sections 516 and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

The Magistrate, Mrs Oluwabusayo Osho, granted the defendants bail for N500,000 with two sureties each.

She adjourned the case until April 8 for a hearing.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr D. O. Ilo, said the defendants should be remanded in Ibara Correctional Centre, pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
