Regional security: NPF partners Interpol on data sharing

Lagos, April 8, ’25 (TNZ) The Nigeria Police, on Tuesday in Abuja, received a delegation from INTERPOL, led by Mr Cyril Gout, the Executive Director Police Services.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun received the delegation in Abuja.

Egbetokun doubles as the new Chairman of the West African Chiefs of Police Committee (WAPCCO).

Force PRO, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement e-mailed to TheNewsZenith in Lagos, noted that the visit was a move aimed at enhancing internal security and law enforcement capabilities through international collaboration.

Earlier today, the Ministry of Police Affairs took over the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) from the INTERPOL on behalf of the Nigerian Government.

According to the FPRO, the visit will strengthen the cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and Interpol.

It is also to notify the police of the handing over of the system (WAPIS) to Nigeria.

TheNewsZenith gathered that WAPIS is currently domiciled with the NPF in Abuja.

The WAPIS system aims to strengthen police information systems throughout the region by harmonising data management practices.

It is equally to bolster data collection efforts and foster enhanced information sharing among law enforcement agencies in the West African Sub-region and Nigeria.

While recognising the significant role of INTERPOL in international cooperation, Egbetokun commended the INTERPOL for its global security efforts.

The IGP noted that the global security body has been tackling complex challenges around the globe.

He assures full cooperation and the implementation of the WAPIS programme in Nigeria and across the West African Region.

”The Nigeria Police Force is committed to leveraging all three levels of WAPIS to maximise their potential.

” We also remain confident that WAPIS will be a game-changer in Nigeria’s fight against crime. (TNZ)
