On Saturday, Gov. Charles Soludo of Anambra State inaugurated the 2024 distribution of economic tree seedlings in Onitsha.

Soludo remarked that planting trees was a way of driving environmental sustainability and wealth creation.

According to him, tree planting is pivotal in sustaining development, preserving the ecosystem and conserving the environment.

The former governor of the Central Bank, Soludo lamented that the neglect of tree planting and environmental conservation had heightened erosion menace in the state.

“This has turned the state into the world’s gully erosion capital.

“People must utilise every inch of the land to drive technology innovation and commerce.

“This is because technology is the foundation for future of the state.

“We are launching an ongoing programme designed to plant at least 10 million tree seedlings in Anambra.

“These trees will in the medium term constitute Anambra’s crude oil. In this activity, lies industrialisation, entertainment and leisure.

“Anambra, is in many ways the second Lagos.

“But the difference between Anambra and Lagos is that, while Lagos is reclaiming its land from the ocean, Anambra is encumbered with erosion,” he said.

Soludo, however, said the state was making progress in all areas.

According to him, traders have started coming back home because there is no room for touting activities across the state.

“The state is doing well in infrastructure. We have earmarked almost 500 kilometres of roads for construction.”

Soludo noted that by 2026, his administration would have completed about 300 roads in Anambra.
