Ughelli killings: Police arrest 8 suspects

The Nigeria Police Force says it made significant progress in its investigation into the tragic ambush and killing of six policemen on Feb. 26.

To this end, the Police have arrested eight suspects in connection with the brutal ambush attack.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force PRO, announced this in a statement emailed to TheNewsZenith on Saturday.

Adejobi stated that the incident occurred in Ughelli, Delta State on Feb. 23.

Adejobi recounted how hoodlums ambushed some officers on a fact-finding mission and others on a rescue mission.

The ambush resulted in the killing of six policemen while six others are still missing in action.

“Following intensive investigative efforts, the police have apprehended eight suspects in connection with the brutal ambush attack.

“Five suspects were initially arrested shortly after the incident and an additional three suspects later apprehended, at different locations,” the statement read in part.

According to Adejobi, the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation.

“The Nigeria Police Force will bring all those responsible for this reprehensible act to justice.

“The Police assure that the suspects will soon have their day in court, with credible evidence, once we conclude investigations.”

Adejobi further stated that the Nigeria Police was deeply saddened by the violence against its officers who were diligently performing their duty to protect and serve the community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the fallen officers during this difficult time.

“We wish to reiterate that killers of our officers in this extant case, and many others, have murdered peace. And none of them will go unpunished,” the statement added.
