Prof. Abiodun Adebayo, the Vice-Chancellor of Covenant University (CU), Sango-Ota, has advised alumni associations to provide mentorship for students of their Alma-Mata to empower future generations.
Adebayo gave the advice at a legacy summit organised by the University of Calabar (UNICAL) Alumni Association, Lagos Chapter, at the weekend.
ThenewsZenith reports that the theme of the Summit was “Uniting Generations, Inspiring The Future”.
Adebayo gave the Keynote message.
He noted that providing mentorship and possible apprenticeship were excellent ways to empower young people to succeed.
“It allows them to have someone to look up to, who can provide guidance and support.
“Mentors can help young people navigate life’s challenges and provide the necessary tools for them to succeed.
“We can leave an enduring legacy to impact the alma mater, the alumni association, and the world for years.
“As the saying goes, we make living by what we get and we make life by what we give.
“By passing the torch, we can give back to society and ensure the legacy of excellence,” TheNewsZenith quotes Adebayo as saying.
According to him, the role of a leader in the society has transformed significantly. The dynamics of today’s globalised and interconnected world present unique obstacles.
Also speaking during the summit, Prof. Florence Obi, Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, said that in spite of Nigeria’s current situation, the university is turning a new leaf.
Prof. Eyong Eyong, the institution’s Dean of Postgraduate School, represented the Vice Chancellor.

Obi encouraged the alumni to keep up the god work. She prayed for all to rise and inspire the future.
The VC said the National University Commission (NUC) has accredited more courses for UNICLAL
“We have over 90 postgraduate programmes and we have established Centre of Gender Studies and Centre for Asian Studies.
“We will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of this institution in March next year by God’s Grace, during the next convocation in March 2025.
“We want all the alumni to participate because we want to re-enact the old good days and times.
“It is time for the alumni to get up to collaborate with us to drive the vision and goals of UNICAL,” she said.
In his opening remarks, Dr Emmanuel Onyenuche, Chairman, UNICAL Alumni Association, Lagos Chapter, said that the alma mater had always been a beacon of excellence.
Onyenuche, Medical Director, Waterfalls Hospital, Lagos, said Lagos Chapter has a collective responsibility to ensure that UNICAL continued to shine.
“This is a chance to reflect on the journey we have undertaken since leaving the Malabo Republic.
“The summit also provide avenue for us to consider how we can continue to contribute to the growth and success of our university,” TheNewsZenith quotes Onyenuche as saying.
