Overall best graduating female student of Yaba College of Technology will henceforth receive largees from a N50 million endowment fund donated by First Lady., Oluremi Tinubu.
TheNewsZenith reports that Tinubu announced the donation at the ongoing 36th Convocation of the College, on Friday, in Lagos.
Represented by the immediate past Chairman of Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board, LASUBEB Wahab Alawiye-King, Tinubu gave the donation while delivering an acceptance speech after the College conferred a fellow of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) on her.
“In pursuant of this vision to promote the education of students, I hereby donate N50 million as an Endowment Fund for the overall best graduating female student of Yaba College of Technology,” she said.
The first lady described education as the bedrock of development.
“Education has always been the cornerstone of my belief in personal growth and development.
“It is my firm belief that it is a collective responsibility of everyone to prepare the young ones for tomorrow,” TheNewsZenith quotes her as saying.
Soyobi Esther and Buraimoh Motunrayo emerged the first recipients of the Tinubu’s endowment fund.
TheNewsZenith reports that the duo studied Food Technology and emerged as the best overall graduating female students under the special award.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abass Tajudeen, highlighted the ongoing efforts to improve funding for polytechnic education.
Abbas, who also became a fellow of the institution, told the gathering that there is a motion in the house to increase polytechnic funds.
“Just on Wednesday, a motion was in the House to increase the funding of Polytechnics,” he said.
TheNewsZenith reports that the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Federal Polytechnics and Higher Technical Education, Kayode Laguda, represented the Speaker.
He described the recent motion as a testament to improve the country’s polytechnic education.
The Speaker said he personally move the motion.
“Also, the House of Representatives, has moved a bill to criminalise the dichotomy between HND and BSC.

“These two bills show that we have the polytechnic and nation in mind. This is because innovation and technology are the bedrock of Polytechnic,” he added.
Earlier, the Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul highlighted some challenges inhibiting the smooth running of the College.
Abdul listed the challenges to include an infrastructure deficit. He recalled that fire gutted one of the hostels, seven years ago and remained in deplorable condition ever since.
“We are looking forward to improving the infrastructure in this college. Our college is landlocked.
“And the only solution for us is to build edifices. Four stories, five stories, 13 stories, 25 stories, and more in the College.
“Facing us directly is that memory of our hostel, destroyed in fire seven years ago.
“And, we are still looking for intervention to repair this hostel.”
He added that the students and female staffers are confronted by accommodation challenges.
The Rectro therefor sought government’s support to build a Female Scholars Lodge and a Female Lecturers Lodge.
“Yaba College of Technology is looking towards having a female scholars lodge, a female lecturers lodge.
“We have land in our quarters, which is begging for development.
“Apart from that, nowadays, innovation and entrepreneurship are important for students.”
He said the college is experiencing dearth of staff accommodation, describing it as “alarming”.
“The minister, sir, and special guests of honour, almost every day in my office, I receive not less than three clarion calls from our female staff looking for accommodation,” Abdul said.
