The management of Yaba College of Technology prides itself on having the most mature and robust student unionism in Nigeria.

Dr Ibrahim Abdul, Rector of Yaba College of Technology in an interview with a TheNewsZenith Editor

Dr Ismail Badmus, Deputy Rector (Academics), made this assertion in an interview with TheNewsZenith, on the sideline of the first anniversary of the Rector, Dr Ibrahim Abdul.

Badmus said a robust relationship cultivated between the College management and the students’ union has engendered peaceful campus life.

This has in turn attracted a lot of goodwill to the college.

“Yaba Tech prides itself has having one of the most mature student unionism in the country.

“On Saturday we had the President of the Student Union with us and he spoke kindly about the College.

“And anytime the students say anything, we see ourselves as their father and mother, as their parent…’’ the Deputy Rector said.

In another interview, Morakinyo Olaolu Shola, President of Yaba Tech SUG, corroborated the views of Dr Badmus.

Shola said, in the last 365 days, the Rector, Dr Ibrahim Abdul, has been like a father to all students.

He said the Rector has proved to be a listening father who attends to the plights of his students.

“Engr. Dr Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul has been a father to the students. And within a short period, he came in as the Rector of this great institution.

“I can specifically say that his administration has been the kind of administration that the Union has been benefiting from……

“When you have a leader that is a listener, a leader that listens at every point in time, you’ll agree with me that he will achieve a lot.

“During his administration in the last one year, we’ve had a lot of engagements with him.

The Union and the College management, under his administration, we have mutual understanding …..’’ the SUG president said.

The Rector, Dr Abdul also attested to the fact that the majority of the College students are peace-loving children who do not give management any headache.

“We’ve been having challenges with some set of the students.

“But the majority are for peace and that is why it is very easy for us to overcome those who are troublesome.

“The students were emboldened and they were able to deal with the troublemakers among themselves,’’ the Rector said.

This has helped to deter those who want to foment trouble.

Meanwhile, Abdul said the College maintains good relationships with various security operatives who have also helped to maintain peace and orderliness on campus to stem any crisis.

He also said that on the assumption of office, his management beefed up internal security and re-invigorated the security architecture to be able to deal with ugly situations.

“We also reinvigorate our security apparatus was also invigorated and fortified to deal with external forces.

“The thieves come, we arrest them as they come and we prosecute them.

“The Dean of Student Affairs is their regular interactive head, thus maintaining good relationships with our students.

“We also have quarterly interaction with the Students’ Union leaders.

“ This has been yielding positive results, leading to peace and harmonious relations among all stakeholders in the College community,’’ Abdul told TheNewsZenith.
