Ogun State Government has charged all its Information Managers to embrace Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the dissemination of government information for better public understanding.

TheNewsZenith reports that the State’s Head of Service (HOS), Mr Kehinde Onasanya gave this charge at the opening of a two-day capacity training programme for Information/Public Relations Officers, on Wednesday, in Abeokuta.

The theme of the training was “Upscaling Public Information Management through Strategic Public Relations”.

“We must all realise that the world of information management for government institutions has changed dramatically.

“There has been a paradigm shift from how it was practised before, compared to the era of ICT that we are in now,” TheNewsZenith quotes Onasanya as telling the Information Managers.

He urged participants to utilise the transition from the industrial age of practice to the knowledge-based age, driven by ICT and social media as its by-product for excellent service delivery.

ICT, Onasanya added, will enhance your career competence and reliability as you navigate through the seeming operational challenges.

According to Onasanya, the training aimed at promoting efficiency and effective work ethics among media managers.

“It will address core areas of information management including creating a good feedback mechanism to bridge the gap between the government and the governed.

“The training is imperative to improve the services of the information/public relations officer in enhancing effective governance in Ogun State.”

The HOS thanked Gov. Dapo Abiodun for investing in capacity building of all cadres of the state workforce.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Communication, Mr Kayode Akinmade, said the training was necessary to bridge the noticeable information management gaps in the dissemination of government information.

Akinmade identified such gaps to include a lack of requisite knowledge, expertise and limited roles for the information handlers among others.

He added that the training would provide the necessary skills to enable the information managers to excel in their statutory duties.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Establishments and Training, Mrs Lydia Fajounbo spoke on the primary responsibility of the agency.

This, she said, “is to build the capacity of the government workforce for excellent service delivery”.

According to Fajounbo, this training is essential for excellent reporting of government programmes and policies to project the government image accurately.

The PS added that the government should equip media managers with ICT skills to meet today’s demand for optional performance.
