A healthcare organisation, Khayr Cancer Health Initiative (KCHI), is mobilising experts to advocate for the revolution of cancer care via the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
TheNewsZenith reports that in line with its advocacy vision, KCHI hosted her second sensitisation webinar. The webinar was titled “Artificial Intelligence and Cancer Care”.
This pioneering initiative brought together leading experts in information communication technology, robotics, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders. They explore the intersection of AI and cancer care within the Nigerian context.
Amidst the challenges of limited resources and access to advanced healthcare technologies, the webinar catalysed innovation and collaboration.
This would pave the way for a brighter future in cancer diagnosis, treatment and management across Nigeria.
A renowned Acadopreneur and Vice Chancellor of Summit University, Offa, Kwara State, Prof. Abiodun Musa Aibinu, made an insightful presentation during the virtual discussion.
Giving an overview of the presentation, Aibinu ex-ray the fourth industrial revolution. This, he said, is a transformative period marked by the convergence of digital, biological and physical technologies.
“It includes the incorporation of cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, blockchains and Internet of Things (IoT).
“Also incorporated are big data analytics and additive manufacturing (3D printing) into industrial processes and efficiency.
“At its foundation, Industry 4.0 seeks to establish “smart factories” or “smart industries” in which machines, processes, and products interact and collaborate seamlessly over linked networks.
“This interconnection enables real-time data sharing and decision-making, increasing efficiency, flexibility, and customisation,” he said.
On the application of AI in Healthcare, he said AI has made a significant impact across industries, especially in healthcare.
“The primary aim of AI applications in healthcare is to analyse links between prevention or treatment approaches and patient outcomes.
The Don enlightened webinar participants on technological breakthroughs in medical imaging and diagnostics like X-rays, MRIs and CT scans.

He also listed drug discovery and development, personalised treatment plans, wearable devices for health monitoring, robot-assisted surgery and many more as tech breakthroughs in the healthcare field.
.According to Aibinu, AI has immense potential to transform every aspect of healthcare. He said this stretches from diagnosis and treatment to administration and research.
By harnessing the power of AI, he said healthcare organisations could deliver effective, personalised and accessible care to patients worldwide.
On the impact of AI in fighting cancer, Aibinu said the fight was profound and multifaceted. According to him, it is revolutionising the way cancer is diagnosed, treated and managed.
The Vice-Chancellor also spoke on early detection and diagnosis of cancer and treatment planning and decision support for patients. He also touched on drug discovery and development as well as patient monitoring and risk management.
In her opening remark, Dr Bilkisu Farouk Usman, Head, Department of Radiology, Barau Dikko University Teaching Hospital emphasized the need for early screening of breast cancer as an antidote for early treatment.
Also speaking, the Executive Director of KCHI, Madinat Hassan, remarked that the convergence of artificial intelligence and cancer care presents unprecedented opportunities to revolutionise healthcare delivery.
“By harnessing the power of AI-driven technologies, we can overcome barriers to access, improve diagnostic accuracy. Also, it can ultimately save lives,” Hassan said.
Webinar participants underscored the widespread interest and urgency surrounding the adoption of AI in cancer care.
They acknowledged that Nigeria was striving to address the growing burden of cancer and enhance the quality of care for patients nationwide.
The participant, therefore, believed that initiatives like the “AI and Cancer Care” webinar would serve as a cornerstone for innovation in the healthcare sector.
