Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has directed the Police to arrest the former Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero for attempting to forcefully return to the palace.

Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa announced the directive in a statement late on Friday.

In the statement, the governor also accused Ado Bayero of creating tension in the state after his dethronment.

“The former Emir was smuggled into Kano city last night. This was in an attempt to forcefully return to the palace two days after being deposed by the Governor.

“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has directed the Commissioner of Police to arrest the deposed Emir with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.

The governor believed that the deposed Emir was disturbing and destroying public peace in the state.

Sources in the Emirate hinted that deposed Emir Ado Bayero, allegedly returned to Kano, on Friday.

TheNewsZenith recalls that the governor on Thursday officially approved the reappointment of former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, as the Emir of Kano.

The State Assembly also passed a bill dissolving the establishment of the additional emirates on Thursday.

The bill is titled, “The Kano State Emirates Councils (Repeal) Bill, 2024.”

The new law abrogated the creation of the emirates in 2019 and the restoration of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano Emirate.

It was first amended in 2019 amid a rift between former Gov. Ganduje and Sanusi, a former Central Bank Governor.

The first amendment broke the Kano Emirate into five, with the creation of the Rano, Karaye, Gaya and Bichi emirates.

It also provided for the appointment of first-class emirs for the new emirates, which eventually culminated in the deposition of the then-Emir of Kano.

The victory of Gov. Yusuf in the last election had renewed calls for the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi.

In his campaign, Yusuf had promised to restore the old Kano Emirate system.
