The Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN), Lagos State Branch, earlier in the week inaugurated its 2024 Legal Year with a grand reception and lecture.

TheNewsZenith reports that the occasion brought together prominent personalities in the judiciary, legal practitioners and Islamic scholars.

The theme of the Legal Year is “The Judge, Judgment, and Justice: Implications for Terrestrial and Celestial Success”.

A renowned Professor of Law from the University of Ilorin, Prof. Abdul Razaq Alaro, delivered the Guest Lecture, calling on judges and other legal professionals to jealously guard the reputation of the profession.

Alaro explored the interconnectedness between the terrestrial and celestial success for judges and legal professionals.

His lecture further dwells on the ethical implications of judgement and the justice system in both this life and the hereafter.

The Law professor frowns at the recent stereotyping of the judiciary as being the most corrupt institution in Nigeria.

He also detested the labelling of judges as “the biggest bribe takers in Nigeria”

“Whether that is correct or not, the accusation itself is bad for the reputation of a hallowed judicial institution.

“Judiciary is saddled with the responsibility of rendering and upholding justice,” TheNewsZenith quoted Alaran as saying.

He, therefore, commended MULAN for choosing the topic of 2024 Legal Year, expressing hope that players in the judiciary sector would address this stereotyping issue exhaustively and come up with workable recommendations.

“The topic is timely, given the fact that the Nigerian judiciary has recently been tagged as the most corrupt institution in Nigeria and that judges are the biggest bribe takers in Nigeria,” he said.

“Let me commend the organisers of this event, the Muslim Lawyers’ Association of Nigeria (MULAN), Lagos State Branch, for choosing this topic.

“This is coming at the most appropriate time in the history of our profession.

“It is appropriate because a new Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-ekun (CJN), has just assumed the mantle of leadership of the country’s judiciary.

TheNewsZenith reports that another legal luminary and former Chairman of the Lagos State Law Reform, Dr Kemi Pinheiro, chaired the occasion.

Pinheiro spoke on the crucial role of the judiciary in ensuring justice, fairness and equity. This, he said, was not only in the eyes of the law but also under Islamic jurisprudence.

He underscored the responsibilities that judges and lawyers bear in shaping society.

“Every ruling and verdict is not just a legal statement. It is a moral and ethical one,” the founder of Pinheiro LP said.

He encouraged legal professionals to uphold justice with sincerity and dedication. He quoted relevant verses from the Holy Qur’an to buttress his point.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of MULAN,  Ismail Adebayo, thanked dignitaries and members for attending the gathering.

Adebayo outlined the association’s initiatives to support its members and the wider Muslim Ummah.

He emphasised MULAN’s commitment to pro bono services, legal advisory for the indigent, and young Muslim lawyers’ development.

The chairman used the occasion to announce the establishment of the MULAN Welfare Fund (MUWEF), which would be launched soon.

He said MUWEF is a special fund to support welfare projects through halal investments.

TheNewsZenith reports that MULAN’s New Legal Year event is a platform to showcase the association’s Knowledge Sharing and Professional Development Sessions (KS&PDS).

Adebayo reaffirms the association’s commitment to continued growth and service. He urged senior members of the legal profession to contribute to the development of young Muslim lawyers.
