Lagos, Jan. 21, ’25 (TNZ) The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Ikorodu Chapter,  has appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in the rising cost of poultry feed and prevent food insecurity.

TheNewsZenith reports that Mr Olaoye Ayodeji, the Chairman of PAN made the appeal during the association’s end-of-year party on Tuesday in Ikorodu, Lagos.

Ayodeji said the rising cost of feeds, among other operational challenges, is eroding the smooth operation of the poultry sector.

The situation forced some members to shut down their businesses last year.

“Many members sold off their poultry farms and returned to the labour market because they could no longer operate.

“The poultry industry is a critical sector contributing to the country’s food security, creating employment and enhancing the national economy.

“The government should subsidise the feed temporarily to reduce production costs.

“This is to enable the public to patronise our products,” TheNewsZenith quotes the PAN Chairman as saying.

He noted that insecurity in the northern part of the country has further heightened the challenge facing poultry farmers.

The Northern part of the country is the major producer of grains used in producing poultry feed, he said.

Ayodeji, therefore, urged the federal government to tackle the insecurity in the North. This is necessary to enable farmers to return to farms and cultivate grains.

He also appealed to PAN members to embrace new technological innovations in poultry farming.

“We call on the federal government to increase support to the agriculture sector to guarantee food security. (TNZ)
