Podcast: Growing Gender Presence In Auto-Electrical Apprentice

Dear viewers and esteem audience, we bring yet another episode of TheNewsZenith podcast. In this special edition, we look at the growing gender sensitivity in the automobile electrical technical apprentice.

This is as more women are beginning to delve into a trade largely believed to be preserved for men only.

Introduction

The automotive industry in Nigeria, like in many other parts of the world, has traditionally been male-dominated.

However, in recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of female apprentices entering the field of automobile electrical technology.

This shift is a result of various factors, including increased awareness of gender equality, efforts to empower women in technical fields and the changing perceptions of women’s roles in the workplace.

Challenges Faced by Female Apprentices

Female apprentices in Nigeria’s automobile electrical sector often face significant challenges.

These include societal expectations, stereotypes and biases that suggest technical trades are more suited to men.

Additionally, they may encounter resistance or lack of support from family and peer groups who might not see this as an appropriate career path for women.

Workplace challenges, such as gender discrimination, unequal treatment and sometimes a lack of mentorship opportunities, also present hurdles for these women.

Our crew visited the workshop of a popular auto-electrical technician, locally known as “Motor Rewire”, AbdulWasiu Amballi Auto-Electrical Workshop, at the Iganmu area of Lagos.

Amballi says he has been working as an auto-rewire technician since 1999 after he completed his apprentice training.

He says he has about 40 apprentices, learning the work from him. Some of them are also students in tertiary institutions.

An outspoken Maryam Abdulganiy, who joined the workshop barely one year ago, narrates her experience and why she chose to learn the auto-electrical work.
