A Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court in the Federal Capital Territory has sentenced a 24-year-old security guard, John Paul, to five months imprisonment for negligent conduct.
Paul, who resides in Kubwa, Abuja, was convicted and sentenced after pleading guilty to the charge.
He, however, pleaded for leniency.
The Judge, Mr Sulyman Ola, gave him an option to pay a fine of N20,000 and ordered him to pay the complainant, Mr Emmanuel Nwafor N240,000 as compensation.
Ola ordered Paul to produce a guarantor and pay the compensation within six weeks.
The judge added that if he fails to pay the compensation, he would serve additional three months in prison.
He warned him to be of good behaviour and desist from committing crimes.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Babajide Olanipekun told the court that the complainant of NAP site Estate, Kubwa, Abuja reported the matter at Kubwa Police Station on Sept.16.
Olanipekun said the convict, who is the complainant’s security guard at the said address was entrusted with the safety of all the property in the house.
The prosecution counsel said due to Paul’s negligence, one generator set valued at N240,000 was stolen.
He said the offence contravened the provisions of section 196 of the Penal Code of the Federal Capital Territory.
