Vice President Kashim Shettima, on Tuesday, visited Maiduguri for an on-the-spot assessment of the flooding that ravaged the Northeast state, describing the disaster as the most catastrophic in over three decades.
TheNewsZenith reports that Shettima observed that the flooding impacts exceeded estimation.
He, however, assured that the Federal Government would prioritise the welfare of the affected communities.
The nation’s No. 2 citizen said Nigeria’s vulnerability to flood disasters has been highlighted time and again.
He recalled that the country witnessed devastating floods in 2012, 2018 and 2022.
According to the VP, the flood’s unprecedented scale has brought challenges beyond our previous experiences.
“The disaster serves as a sobering reminder of the increasing threats posed by climate change. This is not just globally, but particularly in North East regions,” he said.
Shettima attributed the disasters to different factors in a diverse magnitude.

“It is for this reason that President Bola Tinubu has developed a comprehensive roadmap to address these challenges headlong.”
The VP commiserated with victims of the flood disaster. He expressed deepest sympathies of President Tinubu to them.
He said the flood, which began over the weekend and worsened in the following days, was the direct result of excess water from the Alau Dam.
Shettima said in response to the 2024 flood outlook, the government had implemented comprehensive contingency plans and adopted proactive measures to mitigate potential impacts.
According to him, the government intensified its interventions in flood-prone areas characterised by erratic rainfall patterns and complex river basin dynamics.
He said the Northeast had been prioritised in flood mitigation strategies to safeguard communities, protect agricultural zones and reinforce critical infrastructure.
He commended the government of Borno State for its effective response to the tragic situation.
