Subject public servants to drug tests – Defence College provost

Prof. Adam Ahmed, the Provost of National Defence College, has joined the call to subject public officers to drug tests in the country.

Ahmed made his position known while answering questions from newsmen at the sixth Annual Ramadan lecture, on Saturday in Abuja.

The FCT-based Ashraaf Islamic Foundation organised the lecture series and prayer for the nation.

The theme of the lecture is, “Drug Abuse, Criminality and Insecurity in Nigeria: Toward a Collective Solution”.

According to him, the behaviour of some political appointees and elected persons clearly show that they are on drug use.

“Some technocrats and security personnel too sometime also exhibit same behaviour of under drug influence,” he said.

Ahmed recalled that in Malaysia, Philippines and some Southern American countries, politicians are tested before they are given power.

“Not just that every person that holding power including military and security officer is tested before being given serious responsibility.

“Leaders have a way of influencing followers. If they misused drug, the tendency is that they will influence their followers.

“That is why I believe no one should be given any serious responsibility until the person is tested for drugs.”

He called on those that were responsible for drug legislation and administration of anti-drug usage to be more proactive in tackling incidence of drug abuse.

Ahmed, however, commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other relevant agencies for curtailing the menace of drug abuse in the country.

Earlier, initiator of the foundation, Imam Sharafudeen Aliagan, spoke on the objective of the event.

According to him, it is to find a lasting solution to the rampant effects of drug abuse in society.
