UniAbuja gets first female vice-chancellor

Abuja, Jan. 1 ’25 (TNZ) For the first time in its 36 years of academic journey, the Governing Council of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has appointed the first female Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi.

TheNewsZenith reports that the Council announced the appointment during its 77th extraordinary meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

Maikudi, a professor of international law, becomes the institution’s seventh substantive Vice-Chancellor (VC) effective from Jan. 1 and will serve a single, nonrenewable five-year tenure.

Prof. Aisha Sani Maikudi becomes the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja.

She emerged as the top candidate among 10 shortlisted applicants after a rigorous interview process by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board (JCSSB).

Before her appointment, she has been acting Vice-Chancellor since July 5, 2024.

Born on Jan. 31, 1983, in Katsina, Maikudi is a distinguished scholar and professor of International Law.

She earned an LLB from the University of Reading, UK, in 2004 and later an LLM specialising in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005.

On completion of her legal education at the Nigerian Law School (2006–2007), Maikudi obtained a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja in 2015.
