Upgrading Ibadan airport’ll drive investments in Oyo – Makinde

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says the upgrade of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport to the International Airport will boost the state’s investment drive.

TheNewsZenith reports that the governor said at the groundbreaking of the airport project that the facility would position Ibadan as a true regional business hub.

According to him, the airport would improve the ease of doing business. It will also bring in more investments in agribusiness, manufacturing and technology sectors.

TheNewsZenith recalls that the Federal Government had approved the Oyo State government to upgrade the facility.

Consequently, the governor inaugurated an 11-man committee to deliver on the project. A former Commissioner for Finance, Mr Bimbo Adekanmbi headed the committee.

Makinde said his administration awarded the project contract to Messrs Craneburg for N41 billion.

He promised then, that to deliver the project within 12 months.

The governor thanked the committee for speedily preparing the project to the groundbreaking level withn six weeks.

“Some people do not think that upgrading this airport at this time is a good idea. However, the decision to upgrade this airport to international standard is based on data and logic.

“In the next twelve months, this project will be delivered. The groundbreaking is the first phase.

“The second phase is the terminal itself. Once we do the runway and air-field lighting, we will deliver the terminal.

In his remarks, Air Commodore Victor Ajiboye, the Commander of the National Air Defence Corps, Nigerian Air Force said the completion of the project, would position Ibadan as an economic hub in South-West Nigeria.

Also speaking, the Acting Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr Francis Balogun and the representative of the Airport Community Development Association, Dr Ogunsesan thanked the governor for the initiative.

They commended Makinde for bringing the dream to upgrade the airport to international standards after 40 years of existence, to fruition.
