YabaTech receives TETFund’s N34m cancer treatment grant

The Yaba College of Technology’s Research Team has received N34 million grant for cancer treatment from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

TheNewsZenith reports that TETFunde awarded the grant under its National Research Fund programme.

The grant will enable the researchers to develop an artificial intelligence-based precision medicine solution for prostate cancer treatment.

The researchers are to provide a solution that can potentially improve the treatment for prostate cancer patients in Nigeria.

The grant is meant to develop a technique that uses AI to predict optimal drug combinations for individual prostate cancer patients based on analyses of biopsy tissue samples.

Experts in Computer Engineering, Medical Biochemistry, Oncology, Pathology, Zoology, Pharmacognosy and Ethnopharmacy, Toxicology, and Pharmacology are partnering with YabaTech’s researchers.

They will have access to biopsy samples from consenting prostate cancer patients in Nigeria.

The Principal Investigator, Mrs Amolegbe Oluwatosin Aishat of the Department of Biological Science, at YabaTech, is leading the researchers on this project.

Amolegbe’s co-researchers are from the College, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto and the University of Lagos.

The College Rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, who had received the cheque, was full of excitement and jubilation while presenting the cheque to the research team.

Abdul pledged the College’s total support to the team on the innovative work to the desired end.

“We are excited to support Mrs Amolegbe and her team in this innovative work,” the Rector said.

He congratulated the team on this well-deserved grant.

Other co-researchers are Dr Mustapha Imam, Dr Funmilayo Doherty, Dr Ibrahim Malami, Dr Idowu Aneyo, Engr. Adebayo Adebari and Dr Waidi Abiodun Ashiru.
