2023 Elections: EU denies call for sack of INEC Chairman

The European Union in Nigeria has dismissed a report that it called for the sack of the Chairman of the INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

A report alleges The EU, in partnership with National Democratic Institute and International Republican Institute, wanted the INEC boss sacked.

The EU, in a purported letter currently circulating, allegedly observed that Saturday’s election was marred by electoral malpractice.

It also claimed that the EU dubbed the election, as lacking in transparency and constitutional operational failures.

These, it stated, are in a clear violation of democratic principles.

The alleged letter partly reads:

“The Democracy Review Office for the EU recommends the stepping down of the sitting INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

However, the EU in Nigeria dismissed the statement, saying it didn’t emanate from the commission.

The Press Officer for the EU in Nigeria, Agnes Doka, told newsmen that the European Union did not enter into any alliance with the NDI as indicated in the letter.

She added that The EU has nothing to do with the letter regarding the just concluded general elections.

One Eric Mamer purportedly issued the letter on March 2.
