Students of the Lagos State University (LASU), which hitherto is non-residential, will now enjoy a hostel facility, from the next academic session.

The LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, announced on Wednesday, that an 8,000-bed hostel is now ready for allocation at the Ojo Campus.

TheNewsZenith recalls that in July, a Non-Governmental Organisation, Lagos State University Development Foundation (LASUDEF) handed over a 98-bed unit of female hostel to the management of the institution.

Chairman of LASUDEF, Justice Solomon Hunponu-Wusu, had said the purpose of the hostel accommodation was “to change Lagos State University from a non-residential institution to a residential one.

Olatunji-Bello spoke at a news conference to mark her second-year anniversary as LASU Vice-Chancellor. She said students would start getting hostel spaces from the next academic session.

“LASU management expresses its commitment to addressing concerns raised by students.

“I have approved provision of free transportation for students commuting between LASU Iba Gate and Iyana-School, morning and evening, daily.

Also, the VC said management has started to implement a work-study scheme to enable students to engage in volunteer work and get stipends at various centres of the university.

“There is a plan to co-host the African Universities Games with the University of Lagos. The competition will come up later this year.

Olatunji-Bello said she has also approved the extension of the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic session by two weeks.

“Examination will now commence mid of Nov. 2023,” she said.

In response to overcrowding of classes, the VC said LASU has adopted a hybrid (physical and online) mode of teaching for large classes.

“LASU is already making provision for facilities to support hybrid teaching.”
